What can I do after I return to Skagway?

You may have time to explore favorite local spots: Lower Reid Falls, Dyea Townsite or take a short hike over the footbridge (located at the airport) down to Smugglers Cove. And my favorite, is to watch the nesting Artic Terns in May-June along the roadside between the airport & heliport~ just to name a few! And of course, shop at the many local shops on and off Broadway or visit the Gold Rush (period) museums.

FAQs

What if there is a vehicle breakdown?

We make sure vehicles are road ready, daily. Most of the time cell service will be unavailable. Many locals and tour companies will offer assistance so, ask them for help. Please stay on South Klondike Highway or Dyea Road at all times. Should there be a problem and you can not reach us, please lock up, try to note where car will be left and bring keys and yourself back to Skagway.

Does Drive About Car Rental permit cars to go up to Emerald Lake in the Yukon?

Yes! Emerald Lake is the farthest cars go, this is the turn around point. Visit the main town of Carcross while there. The turn off has a Caribou Sculpture.

When I pick up the vehicle, I notice something is a concern. What should I do?

Call us immediately. (907) 612-0032 Do not drive away without notifying us. It is expected that the vehicle is in good working condition. Be responsible for your own sake and let us know.

Can I see the same things as I could if on the WPYR train?

Yes and no. The Klondike Highway is parallel to the rails with a valley between them. But at different points the train will travel behind a mountain or the road will go along lakes. each will have it own vantage point for waterfalls and views even though both pass the same spot. There is no doubt driving the Klondike will not be disappointing. And you have the freedom to stop at any of the pull-offs and take in the unbelievable scenery for as long as you like. Breathe the freshest air you can imagine.

How much time should I allow for a day trip?

Skagway, AK to Carcross,YT round trip for just a scenic drive- allow 4 hours (This gives you an approximate amount of time to clear customs in both directions too) with several stops and/or partaking in activities approximately 6-8 hours (including customs check). We suggest waiting until you return to Skagway before driving to the Lookout or Dyea or other local places of interest.

What wildlife might I see?

Wildlife can be seen along the Klondike Highway and you can stop and observe at your pace. BUT beware- DO NOT FEED the BEARS Both Black species and Brown (aka Grizzley). They can be temperamental and are fast (30 mph if running) so, remain in your car too! You could also see Marmots, Ptarmigan (State bird), Moose, Caribou, Ground Squirrels, Lynx, Coyote, Hawks, Eagles and Waterfowl species, Wolf, Red Fox, Dall Sheep and Mountain Goat.
